Meet Hoosain Dixon, South African man who creates robots from scrap

Hoosain Dixon creates robots from scrap metal found at a nearby dump site

After getting retrenched from work, he started building the robots to support his family -

The Bridgetown resident has sold two robots so far

It is widely predicted that robots will become part of our daily lives within the next few decades. Asian inventors are leading the way with their innovative robotic creations and many families in countries, such as China and Japan, already boast robot pets.

Hoosain Dixon boasts a life-size robot of his own. However, the 49-year-old is based in Bridgetown on the Cape Flats in South Africa.

Incredibly, he built the robot, known as Robot 5 (R5), with his bare hands using scrap found at a dump site close by.

Using material such as shoe straps, car door parts and a lipstick container, Dixon built the amazing invention within 2 months.

Dixon recalls being good with his hands since his childhood. The father of 3 unfortunately lost his job after working in the hospitality industry for 25 years.

SA People News reported that Dixon’s dream is to see his robots in motion at an exhibition. He revealed a useful detail about his robots recently.

He said: “As you can see, I have connected wiring to this robot which is why these tiny light bulbs work, but I am yet to connect something to make it move.”

Dixon builds the robots to help him keep busy and earn an income for his family. He shared, “There is a lot of crime here in this area by youngsters who are unemployed. I want them to see that you can do things to keep yourself busy that do not involve crime.”

Globalsshows.blogspot discovered that Dixon has managed to sell 2 robots thus far. He charges people R5 or R10 to take selfies with the robot.

This is coming after a young Nigerian named Silas Adekunle took his passion for robotics to a higher level by building a gaming robot called MekaMon. Now, this is taking him places. Indeed, one's hands are full of limitless possibilities that can spur a person to greatness.
